Learn the rules where they happen: on the road
Voorrah! is a driving game for everyone working towards a Dutch driving licence. You drive a car through a 3D Amsterdam with real traffic, and every lesson teaches one rule, in English, with the Dutch words you meet on the CBR exam.

Why we made it
Many people in the Netherlands learn to drive in a new language, in a city they did not grow up in. The usual way is a theory book or an app full of questions: read, memorise, repeat. It gets you through the theory exam, but on your first lessons the rules still come too late. You know the sentence, yet the cyclist is already beside you.
Driving lessons are expensive, so every minute in the car counts. We wanted something in between: a place where you meet each rule as a moment on the road, make the mistakes safely and cheaply, and arrive at your lessons already looking in the right places. So we built Amsterdam, put you behind the wheel, and gave you an instructor, Kees, who tells you what went wrong and why.
Why driving beats cramming
The exam asks what you would do
Most of the CBR theory exam is not “recite the rule”: it shows you a traffic situation and asks what you do next, or who goes first. That is a skill of seeing and deciding, and you build it by meeting situations, not by rereading sentences.
You remember what you do
Memory research calls it the testing effect: pulling an answer out of your head, again and again, fixes it far better than reading it once more. In a lesson you cannot skim. A cyclist comes from the right and you have to decide, now.
Mistakes cost nothing here
Go first when you should not, and Kees freezes the moment. You see it from above: who was where, how fast they came, and which rule you broke. In a real car that same mistake is dangerous, and in a lesson it costs paid minutes.
Seeing is half the rule
Knowing “give way at shark teeth” is easy. Judging that a car 47 metres away at 50 km/h is there in about three seconds is the hard part. You only learn that timing by watching traffic come at you.
Amsterdam’s own traffic
Bikes on both sides, trams that go first at equal junctions, canal bridges that open, woonerven full of children, bus lanes and shark teeth everywhere. A textbook mentions them once; in Voorrah! you drive among them every lesson.
A few minutes a day
Lessons are short, so you can do one on the tram or before bed. Little and often keeps the rules fresh until your exam, instead of one long night with the book.
Cramming vs. driving it
| Cramming the book | Driving it in Voorrah! |
|---|---|
| Read the rule, maybe underline it | Drive through the rule, and decide in time |
| Learn the words “voorrang van rechts” | Feel when a car from the right is close enough to matter |
| Find your mistakes in the exam | See each mistake frozen, from above, with the reason |
| Rules as a list | Rules in the places you will meet them: Amsterdam’s streets |
| Easy to forget after the exam | Habits you take into your first real lesson |
What is inside
- 59 driving lessons, one rule each, from priority to the right to the motorway
- Kees, your instructor, who freezes the moment and explains every mistake
- Practice driving exams: a city route, and the full route with the polder and the A10
- Theory practice, a 50-question practice exam and a hazard drill
- 163 road signs, with their Dutch names
- Challenges, a leaderboard and a story: deliveries across Amsterdam for Bakkerij Bep
The first lessons are free, and you need no account to start. You can also read every rule and every road sign here on the site.
What it is not
Voorrah! is a practice game. It does not replace lessons with a driving instructor, and it is not made by or linked to the CBR. Use it next to your lessons and your theory book, to make the rules stick.
